Dental Homecare – Caring for Your Pet’s Teeth

How Can I Prevent Dental disease

Daily brushing is the “gold standard” of pet care. It stops plaque from turning into rock-hard tartar that requires surgery to remove. The secret is to take it slow and make it a fun, rewarding part of your daily routine.

It is best to start introducing tooth brushing as young as possible, but it is never too late to start, as daily brushing will prevent further plaque build-up

The Dental Action Training Guide

We recommend a gradual, reward-based approach to help your pet feel comfortable. Never rush, if your pet gets stressed, simply go back a step.

For Dogs: Start with a “Chin Rest,” teach them to rest their head in your hand for a treat. Introduce pet-friendly toothpaste on your finger first, then move to a soft brush at a 45 degree angle toward the gum line.

For Cats: Focus on scent. Let your cat rub their face on the brush first so it smells familiar and “safe.” Use a fish or poultry-flavoured paste and keep sessions very short (10–20 seconds).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my pet is in pain?

Pets rarely stop eating until dental pain is severe. Subtle indicators include dropping food, chewing on one side of the mouth, pawing at the face, or becoming less social or more withdrawn than usual.

Why are dental X-rays recommended for cats (FORLs)?

Since 60% of a tooth is hidden under the gum line, a visual check is often insufficient. In cats, X-rays are vital for diagnosing FORLs (Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions). This is a painful condition where the tooth dissolves from the root upwards. A tooth may appear normal to the eye while causing significant internal pain; X-rays are the only way to identify these lesions.

Is a "Scale and Polish" a cosmetic procedure?

No. While it does result in cleaner teeth and fresher breath, the primary goal is medical. Scaling removes calculus (mineralised bacteria) that causes gum inflammation and bone loss. Polishing smooths the enamel, making it harder for new plaque to accumulate. It is a preventative treatment designed to avoid future extractions.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, contact your local Lanes Vets branch to book an assessment. If you're a VIP Platinum Member, your consultation fee is already included in your plan!
