Health Checks
Why have a health check?
Most pets live a happy and healthy life and many only have a health check annually at their vaccinations, a lot can change in 12 months. However, here at Lanes Vets, we believe that prevention is better than cure. As our pet’s cannot always tell us when something is wrong, regular health checks with one of vets can be extremely helpful to your pet’s wellbeing. They allow us to detect any problems early and deal with them promptly. Health checks are also a great way for you to ask any questions you may have regarding your pet’s care. (put in about VIP plan)
Alongside, regular health checks we recommend monitoring your pet at home for any changes in their behaviour and, if you feel comfortable, to check their teeth, ears, eyes, body, skin and coat for any changes.
Health checks through every stage of your pet’s life
As our pets move through each stage of their life, their health needs will change. Each health check offered will take into consideration the unique needs for each life stage, whether that be growth and development for new puppies or reduce mobility and hearing for our senior friends.
What pet do you have?
Teeth
It is important to have regular dental checks as a large amount of food, non-food and bacteria travel through your pet’s mouth, and as many pets don’t have their teeth cleaned daily this can lead to tooth and gum issues.
Eyes
Eyes can tell us a lot about our health, and it’s the same for our pets. We will check your pet’s eyes for a healthy colour, range of movement, pupil reactions, any signs of weeping or discomfort, and conditions.
Ears
A pet’s ears can become a melting pot for dirt, bacteria and infections if they are not kept clean. Your pet’s ears will be thoroughly checked during a health check up with our team and you will be advised if any cleaning or exploratory action needs to be taken.

Feet And Claws
Grit and foreign objects can get trapped between pads and claws causing discomfort and even infection. Overgrown nails are uncomfortable and can even cause dogs to become disorientated due to the nerve endings in them. If we discover any issues during your pet’s health check, our team can help to resolve them and make your pet feel better.
Skin And Coat
We will look at your pet’s coat and body condition to help determine their level of health. Some illnesses can be spotted externally as their clinical signs are shown in the coat, such as fur loss. Hair loss can also be a sign of self-inflicted trauma and infection.
Mobility
Have you noticed any changes in your pet’s mobility? A change could suggest either an injury, weight issue, health condition or they may just be getting older and their movement slowing down. We will examine your pet’s joints for any signs of arthritis or discomfort and, if necessary, discuss treatment options and lifestyle changes with you
Abdomen
Your pet’s abdomen will be palpated to feel for any areas of discomfort
Heart And Lungs
We will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs with a stethoscope
